FREE Vision Screening for Seniors

In fulfillment of its mission, the Lions Center for the Visually Impaired-Diablo Valley offers free vision screenings to promote early detection and treatment of age-related eye disease.

According to the American Foundation for the Blind, one in six Americans over the age of 65 will suffer significant vision loss due to age-related degenerative eye disease. Early detection and intervention can slow the progress of eye disease and preserve your sight. The most common causes of vision loss for seniors are macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts. For more information on these conditions, including definitions, symptoms and descriptions of treatment options, click here for our resources page.

Our free screening includes:

  • Risk Assessment – an assessment of your known risk factors.
  • Tests of visual acuity – both distance and near.
  • Test of peripheral vision.
  • A copy of your personal screening results to share with your doctor.
  • Recommendations for appropriate follow-up by medical eye care specialists.
  • Help in locating culturally appropriate professional eye services in your community.
  • Referrals for free and low-cost vision care and products.
  • Follow-up case management and support to make sure you get the care you need if urgent eye issues are identified at the screening.

(Note: A screening does not test for all eye disorders and should not be considered a substitute for visiting an eye care professional.)

If you would like to schedule a screening in your community, please call Shirley Schroth at 925-432-3013.
